Course Information
Description	Fundamental principles of chemistry for majors in the sciences, health sciences, and engineering; topics include measurements, fundamental properties of matter, states of matter, chemical reactions, chemical stoichiometry, periodicity of elemental properties, atomic structure, chemical bonding, molecular structure, solutions, properties of gases, and an introduction to thermodynamics and descriptive chemistry.
Required Textbooks	Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. Chemistry, The Central Science, 14E., Pearson Publishing, Brown, LeMay. Mastering Chemistry access code is required for HW assignments.

Learning Outcomes	Define the fundamental properties of matter. Classify matter, compounds, and chemical reactions. Determine the basic nuclear and electronic structure of atoms. Identify trends in chemical and physical properties of the elements using the Periodic Table. Describe the bonding in and the shape of simple molecules and ions. Solve stoichiometric problems. Write chemical formulas. Write and balance equations. Use the rules of nomenclature to name chemical compounds. Define the types and characteristics of chemical reactions. Use the gas laws and basics of the Kinetic Molecular Theory to solve gas problems. Determine the role of energy in physical changes and chemical reactions. Convert units of measure and demonstrate dimensional analysis skill

Course Policies
Instructor Policies	Any graded work that is not submitted by the due date will NOT be accepted and will result in a zero, with the exception of extenuating circumstances including medical, family, automobile and technology issues. Other circumstances will be considered at the discretion of the instructor. All circumstances will require valid documentation of the issue. Technology issues require a screen shot or picture of the screen taken immediately and sent via email immediately so the issue can be resolved. All assignments must be turned in through Blackboard (BB) in the designated location. Work sent via email will not be accepted unless there is an extenuating circumstance. Any graded work may only be submitted once regardless of the due date. Only this first submission will be graded. Only regular scientific calculators are permitted during exams. All other electronic devices such as cell phones, iPods, headphones, etc. are not allowed. Academic honesty is required and any student found in violation of this policy will not be tolerated. All suspected instances will mandate an entire review of all completed work in the course. Respondus Monitor exam submissions require picture identification and environment check. Failure to provide either will result in zero credit for the submission.
Attendance Policy	Presence is required and attendance will be recorded each day. Missing more than 2 class days will result in a 2 point deduction on the final course grade for each day in excess of 2. Absences may be excused only due to extenuating circumstances. Arriving after attendance has been recorded will result in being counted late. Being counted late twice will have the same penalty as one absence.

COVID 19 Information	The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies	No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
